UNITED MUSLIM ASSOCIATION OF HONG KONG
14th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING in 2018
Respected guests, members, brothers and sisters in Islam, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Thank you for attending this Annual General Meeting of the United Muslim Association of Hong Kong.
As the outgoing Chairman of UMAH, it is my duty to report to you the development that took place during the last one year.
Sheung Shui Mosque and Elderly Home Project
First of all, I would like to report about the mega Project of Sheung Shui Mosque and Elderly Home. Under the capable leadership of our late Chairman, Mr. Alli Din, UMAH acquired a piece of land in Sheung Shui of 2,050 sq.m. for building a masjid and elderly home of 200 beds. Land granted by the Govt. in 2006 under the private treaty for 50 years and date of commencement should be March 2011. Premium paid was HK$9,941,509.
In 2009, Ministry of Finance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed an MOA with our association and pledged to finance the construction of Sheung Shui Masjid and an adjacent Elderly Home at the same piece of land. Drawings of the project was approved by the Building Department of Hong Kong in Aug. 2015. However, in July 2016, the Saudi Government, wrote a letter to the
Lands Department and Home Affairs Bureau in which they informed the Hong Kong government that due to weaker economy in the Kingdom, it was decided to postpone the project until the economy recovers.
In order to protect the precious piece of land, we consulted the leading Muslim organizations, launched a signature campaign and with the supporting letters from more than 15 Muslim organizations, we applied to the land department to request for more time for our donor and to look for additional donors for the Sheung Shui Project. We also applied for the Jockey Club Funding for the construction of Elderly Home of the Sheung Shui Project. Furthermore we formed the Sheung Shui Masjid Action committee and launched the fundraising campaign on March 30, 2018 conducting various programs to raise awareness across the whole of Hong Kong as well as overseas. We have also succeeded in getting the support of a well established charity in Kuwait pledging to fund the project.
I am pleased to share with you that recently we have received two positive developments. One from Saudi Consulate stating the Saudi government is confirming to start the project in 2019. The second is that we have now raised around 2.6 Million HKD.
After years of struggle, Alhamdulillah, UMAH is standing on strong footing and we are optimistic about the outcome of the Sheung Shui Project. I take this opportunity to expresses our sincerest thanks to Board of Trustees (BOT) and all other Muslim organizations for their collective efforts for the Sheung Shui Project.
Report on the ongoing projects:
- Haji Omar Ramju Sadick Care and Attention Home
The Haji Omar Ramju Sadick Care and Attention Home has been serving the community since 1993. It has been more than 20 years of community service. The daily operation of the Elderly Home is going on smooth, however, many of its facilities need to be replaced or upgraded. I would like to appreciate Sr.Rashida Din’s remarkable efforts as a Home Manager of the Elderly Home.
Currently, there are more than 40 elderly receiving home-care service at the Care and Attention Home 12 members of the staff are serving efficiently under the dedicated management of Sr. Rashida Din.
The Madrassah attached to the Haji Omar Ramju Sadick Care and Attention Home is conducted by Hafiz Muhammad Zahid smoothly. It is open for five times prayers for residents living nearby. Weekly Juma’h prayers, Taravih prayers in Ramadan and Eid prayers are conducted in the Madrassah. We would like to show our sincere appreciation for the dedication and capable work of Hafiz Zahid.
- UMAH International Primary School
We are in communication with the EDB regarding the UMAH International Primary School. We will be informing them that we are awaiting their confirmation and will no longer object to their decision as we have tried our best to resolve this issue without success.
During the last few years, we engaged a registered Accountancy firm to complete the auditing of the accounts. I’m pleased to share with you that all the required auditing of the accounts has been completed. With this we hope to complete the long awaiting CR process.
For litigation issues, I would like to update you that the Plaintiffs are still trying to appeal against the Court of Appeal decision, which was in our favor. As per our latest information, they are lodging an appeal to the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, but their chances are very slim.
Furthermore they have decided to launch another civil action with Mr. Ayub Din as plaintiff. Our solicitors are already preparing the legal papers and it is expected to be resolved at the soonest possible time. It is a pity that some people continue to cause trouble. We have no choice but to defend and protect the rights of our members and the interests of the community.
I thank my fellow Council Members for their hard work throughout the year and look forward to similar spirit in the months and years to come.
Before I conclude my report, I would like to extend our tribute to the late Chairman Muhammad Alli Din for his dedication and leadership in setting a firm foundation for UMAH. We would also like to express our gratitude to all those who had contributed in the development of the association in
achieving its vision, including late Haji Omar Ramju Sadick, late Haji Ali Ding, late Haji Kasim Ma, Br. Amin Yeung. May Allah reward them with Jannah al-Firdaus. We would also extend our thankfulness to Mrs. Din and the whole Din family for their dedicated and outstanding contribution to UMAH.
May Allah (s.w.t.) bless you all with good health, happiness and best of Iman. Thank you.
Wa alaikum Assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
